which website platform I think is best + why is definitely one of the most frequently asked questions I get! I’ve worked with just about every platform out there, including having built my own sites on these over the years.
in my opinion, there really isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to web design. it depends on your brand, along with your vision + message. I have narrowed down my website design process to these four platforms depending on the goals + needs of a client’s website.
WORDPRESS
I have used wordpress for years to build many client websites. its perfect for semi custom site builds + blogging. the platform is super user friendly while offering a wide range of theme + plugin options.
I recommend wordpress for service based small businesses that would like to showcase their offerings, portfolio and / or a blog. this platform is best for more information based sites. it also allows the end user to easily update content + images any time without having to use a web developer.
wordpress does require you to purchase your web domain, hosting + ssl certificate through a 3rd party such as go daddy or bluehost. quarterly website maintenance + updates are also highly recommend as the wordpress platform itself, along with theme + plugins are constantly updating + upgrading.
SQUARESPACE
squarespace is a great option for semi custom portfolio or gallery based projects with the option of adding an online store. this platforms is user friendly, allowing the end user to update content, products + images as needed. Squarespace require a monthly subscription which your includes hosting + ssl certificates. web domain purchase is still required, and recommend through a 3rd party such as go daddy. they offer different subscription tiers depending on what your needs are. customization for Squarespace is limited but available if needed.
SHOPIFY
this is my top choice for e-commerce based businesses. Shopify is super easy to use allowing the end user to update + add products / categories as needed. this platform also requires a subscription which your includes hosting + ssl certificates. they offer different subscription tiers depending on what your needs are. web domain purchase is still required, and recommend through a 3rd party such as go daddy. customization for Shopify is very limited without a web develop well versed in liquid – Shopify code, but their themes are quite good, so you shouldn’t need too many changes!
SHOWIT
showit is my new favorite platform and what my current website (that you’re looking at now) is on! it is 100% completely customizable – no themes, no design restrictions, no semi custom builds. this platform also offers subscription tiers which include your hosting + ssl certificate. web domain purchase is still required, and recommend through a 3rd party such as go daddy. showit syncs with wordpress for beautiful blogs + with Shopify if you choose to include an online store. building on showit is more of an investment, but honestly the best option for those looking to have a completely personalized site, including customizable desktop + mobile experiences. this option is definitely for those who give a damn about their brand ! its also very user friendly with is drop + drag functionality, making it very easy easy to update content + pages as needed.
I hope this information helps guide your website decision making to ensure you get the best online home for your brand + products. Comment below if you have any questions!
